Leadership Starts with Awareness

What is leadership, really?

It’s easy to default to a standard definition—something like “the ability to influence others toward a common goal.” That’s not wrong, but it’s also not the full story. Most definitions focus on what leaders do: influence, facilitate, decide, act. A few other definitions might also address how leaders be: through values, beliefs, mindsets, perceptions. But before the being and the doing comes something even more fundamental: awareness.

Awareness is where leadership begins.

It’s the quiet, powerful space from which choices emerge. Every conversation, every decision, every moment of influence, even every moment of being alive is shaped by awareness and choice; what we’re paying attention to—and what we’re not. And yet awareness is often overlooked in conversations about leadership. Or worse, treated as a “nice-to-have” reserved for people in lofty roles with time to spare.

But awareness isn’t a luxury. It’s a necessity.

It’s not something you earn once you have a big title or a corner office. It’s a human capacity we’re all born with. It’s how we perceive the world, make meaning, and respond to it. From a baby crying out of hunger to a CEO navigating market uncertainty, awareness fuels action.

Here’s the tricky part: awareness isn’t static. It’s constantly shifting. It expands when we’re grounded and reflective. It narrows when we’re stressed or reactive. Sometimes we’re aware of the room, the team, the bigger picture. Other times, we’re stuck inside our own heads.

And that’s okay. The goal isn’t perfect awareness—it’s practiced, easeful awareness. The kind that helps us pause, widen our lens, and notice what’s really going on before we rush to solve the problem or steer the ship.

Because leadership today isn’t happening in calm waters.

We’re living in what some call a BANI world—Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, Incomprehensible. (Yes, it’s even more intense than the VUCA world we talked about a few years ago.) Complexity is the new normal. And that means our leadership must evolve—not by doing more, but by being more aware.

At Tango, we believe leadership is the creative expression of awareness.

Not a role. Not a title. Not even a set of competencies.

It’s about how we show up. How we notice. How we choose—again and again—how to respond. Awareness gives us the raw material for great leadership. Without it, we’re just reacting.
So how do we grow this capacity?

Start by paying attention to how you approach challenges:

Do you jump straight to fixing the problem—or pause to understand what’s really going on?

Are you focusing mostly on tactics—or also noticing the systemic dynamics at play?

Are you tuning into your own internal state—or only looking outward?

Are you aware of how your presence affects others—or are you on autopilot?

Are you seeing and choosing the opportunities to influence the culture around you as well as resolve the issue at hand?

Expanding awareness doesn’t require a meditation cushion (though that’s great too). It starts with a simple shift: getting curious. About yourself. Your team. The ripple effects of your choices. The assumptions baked into your strategies.

Leadership isn’t just about what you do. It’s about how you see.

And the clearer your view, the more skillfully—and humanely—you can lead.
