Emerging into a new normal: navigating change and embracing possibilities
Hello! We are really happy you’ve come by for a chat. Let’s Tango!
We’re all sensing it: the shift from COVID-19 as a pandemic to a regular disease we will have to live with, like the flu or pneumonia, is happening.
Many of us are emerging from the pandemic feeling exhausted, burned out, anxious, or depressed. Some feel guilty about the good things that happened last year. Collectively, our resources are low, which makes it harder to navigate the layers of uncertainty. The transition to a new normal will be different for everyone, based on our tolerance for risk and our personal values. It’s not always easy to adjust to a new normal, and we can’t always see the roadmap.
We want to move forward, changed for the better by the many challenges and victories of the past year. We’ve all learned some important and valuable lessons, including lessons about how resilient and adaptable we are.
Reimagining the new normal
As we look toward a “new normal” in the wake of the pandemic and after any significant life event, this is the ideal time to reimagine what’s possible, and reorganize, restructure or re-evaluate how we are operating.
Overcoming resistance to change
Resistance to change is common. We resist change largely because we don’t have a clear vision or we are afraid of losing something we perceive to be of value. There is good news: a well-known formula exists to help us overcome our resistance, namely the Beckhard-Harris change equation: D x V x S > R. The method aims to overcome the psychological costs of change that keep us chained to the past by focusing on three things:
Dissatisfaction with the way things are now
A positive vision of the future
Concrete steps to make the vision a reality
Reflecting and planning for the future
So consider:
What in my life has changed during or since the pandemic?
Where have I shown courage?
What regrets do I have?
What lessons have I learned? What do I want to keep?
What do I know now about what is most important to me?
What do I need to stop doing?
What do I want more of in my life?
What do I want to spend more of my time doing?
What support do I want or need to make the transition to my new vision of the future?
Embracing support and self-care
Coaches play a leading role in helping individuals, teams, and organizations navigate and realize real change that shifts us from striving to thriving. Remember to allow yourself to feel what you are feeling. Practice taking deep breaths when anxiety hits. Reflect on the gifts hidden in the challenges. Celebrate the victories, no matter how small. Acknowledge you are moving forward. Keep an eye on what’s possible in the very near future. Consider working with a coach to help you accelerate your transition to your new vision of the future.
Thanks for stopping by. We hope you found at least one little nugget you are taking away with you. What will you do to bring it into full living color?
